Scenario Cards are wonderful for sparking meaningful conversations with friends and family, but their professional impact is even more profound in the hands of a skilled facilitator
Today, thousands of therapists, executive coaches, and counselors are integrating these decks into their professional practice to bypass resistance and deepen the therapeutic alliance.
Because every card is designed by professionals using the "What If" methodology, they serve as a bridge between a client’s conscious defense and their subcortical insights. Here is how you can use Scenario Cards to enhance your practice.
1. Targeted Theme Work
Whether a client is navigating career transitions or relationship hurdles, you can curate specific cards to match their current journey. Every collection, from Purpose to Intimacy, is designed with a therapeutic progression in mind.
“I have so many clients looking for their purpose and these cards have been truly helpful in moving stuck clients further on their therapeutic journey,” says Stacy T., a psychologist who uses the decks to anchor specific sessions.
Every collection was designed with therapeutic depth and intentional progression in mind, making it simple to find questions that fit your client’s journey.
Bring them intentionally into the session, and consider sending one or two home as reflection prompts in between sessions.
2. Lightening the mood when you hit a wall
We’ve all been there: a session hits a wall where the client isn't ready to go deeper into a specific trauma or topic.
If you’ve reached a client’s “no” and they’re not willing to be guided any deeper, Pulling Scenario Cards can shift the energy.
An unexpected, imaginative question offers a playful path back to connection without the pressure of a direct confrontation.
3. Group therapy icebreakers
In a group setting, the primary hurdle is often the "awkward silence." A well-chosen card invites everyone to share without feeling put on the spot.
It’s perfect for building trust and connection in the room. This can be a nice ice-breaker round, but it can also go quite deep.
As Jackie Y., a counseling psychologist, shares: “Usually the issue in group sessions is the awkwardness among participants. With these cards, it is much easier to break the ice and build trust quickly.”
4. 1-1 Icebreakers
Starting with a card can help new clients feel more comfortable.
Rather than launching into a heavy topic right away, you give them something thoughtful and non-threatening to reflect on.
It sets a collaborative tone and invites them into the work gently.
5. End with light reflection
Near the end of a session that goes deep, pulling a card can offer a gentle way to reorient before the session ends.
You might choose a softer or more imaginative question (perhaps one with a single chili from our gratitude themed pack inside the Purpose Collection).
This can help the client leave with a sense of grounding, curiosity, gratitude, or even a sense of wonder.
6. Assign a take-home question
Some clients love journaling or having something to chew on between sessions.
Offer them (or let them pick) a card to reflect on before you meet next.
You might invite them to write about it, bring their thoughts to the next session, or simply sit with the question and notice what it stirs up.
“I use these cards with my clients to find their calling," says coach Abdul H. "After the sessions, I gift them these cards so they can have the same deep conversations with the people close to them.”
A New Choice Point for Your Clients
Remember: since our questions all start with “What If…” they’re intentionally designed to open up new choice points (moments awareness enter, and new responses become possible).
Whether you’re a therapist, coach, or someone who facilitates, Scenario Cards are a nice tool to add to your toolbox.
