Scenario Cards: Psychology of "What If"

Today, I want to talk about the two short words that start every single question we use in our Scenario Cards: 'What If…

Those two words are: What If…

See, asking a question is like doing a Google search into your psyche. The results you get depend on the exact words you use.

In other words, the way you ask a question shapes the kind of response you’ll receive.

Unlike direct questions, like “Why do you feel this way?” or “What do you want to change?”, “What if” invites exploration without pressure.

It bypasses the inner critic and sends your mind searching in new directions, beyond logic, doubt, or fear, straight into imagination and possibility.

To quote Tammy, a psychologist who uses Scenario Cards in her practice: “The questions make the neural networks light up, they drop into that subcortical level where they can access deeper information.”

To illustrate, let’s look at an example question from the “Life” pack in the Purpose collection.

“What if your parents could experience your life for 24 hours? What would you want them to learn about you and your life?”

Contrast that with the question:

“What’s the one thing your parents just don’t get about you?”

Do you notice a difference? Which feels easy to answer? Which one feels easier to ask someone?

Here’s another example from our Intimacy Collection.

“What if you were in a relationship and you developed feelings for someone else? What meaning would you assign to this?”

This question carries a different tone than asking “Would you betray someone you love to stay true to yourself?”

The difference may seem subtle, but it matters.

No Right or Wrong Answers

What if creates a safe space for curiosity, vulnerability, and reflection.

You can explore future dreams, past experiences, or new perspectives without feeling exposed or needing to commit.

And the good news? Using your imagination still yields valuable insights.

We (myself and the therapists who authored the cards) chose “What if” not just for the tone, but for the transformation it enables.

We truly believe these two words hold the key to meaningful insight because they don’t demand an answer; they invite one.

Whether you’re exploring your purpose, a relationship, or your next step in life, “what if” can be the spark.

It's where growth begins.

It's how you shift from what's holding you back to what could be possible.

  • That’s why we use them.

  • That’s why they work (we’ve sold over 150,000 packs, so this is backed by evidence).

  • And that’s why Scenario Cards is so different from any other deck out there.

I hope you found this useful and interesting.

And sorry if it felt like I was giving a motivational speech. This stuff just fires me up…
